Yes, Timbouctou is a real place.  Timbouctou, the gateway to the desert, sits on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert.  One of Mali's oldest cities, Timbouctou has much to offer the adventurous tourist.  Take a sight seeing trip through the sand dunes of the Sahara on a camel.  If a camel isn't your style, then be sure to visit some of the facinating aritisan markets.  Many treasures, hand made by the nomadic Tuareg tribe, can be found such as leather goods, jewelry, and intricate swords.  The architecture in and around Timbouctou is a sight to behold.  Be sure to visit the aritisan's museum for a glimpse into the rich history of Timbouctou.
