Mopti, known as the Malian equivalent of Venice, Italy, is a thriving river front city located in central Mali.  A busy thoroughfare, you can find all Malian ethnic groups working and trading within the heart of the city.  Mopti is the main port for the fishing industry in Mali.  Visit the expansive artisan's market where you will find hand made leather goods, clothing, textiles, jewelry, and pottery.   A shopper's paradise, you can also find many ethnic foods and spices at the large food market.  Be sure to try the kola nuts, a favorite of the older generation, they make a wonderful gift to the locals.  When you have tired of shopping, be sure to take a relaxing sunset sail on the Niger River.  Trips are available for 1-5 hours on non motorized boats.  The airport for central Mali is located a convenient 10 miles from the heart of Mopti.
