Dogon Country, also known as Pays Dogon, is one of Mali's most hidden treasures. The Dogon people settled into the cliffs of Bandiagara around 1100 AD where they built their adobe style homes. Currently there are over 300 villages stretching over 150 miles or 350 kilometers. Primarily subsistence farmers, they moved their homes from the cliffs to the flatlands about 60 years ago. The villagers live without electricity, running water, and other modern conveniences. Every morning you will hear the rythmic sound of the women pounding the millet in their large wooden bowls. The sounds of the goats, chickens, cows, and horses will also become music to your ears. Each village is known for a particular specialty. Be sure to see the village of Ende where the locally grown cotton is spun, weaved, and dyed into beautiful artistic blankets. You can watch the artisans hand carve interesting wooden statues in the village of Bagourou. The intricate adobe mosque in Kani Kombole is a sight to behold. Nombori has a unique and historical museum filled with local treasures. Don't miss seeing the crocodiles in the village of Amani. During certain parts of the year you can witness spectacular traditional mask dances in several of the villages. The Dogon people are a culture that you do not want to miss. They are peaceful and enjoy inviting the tourist into their homes for a meal, conversation, or a picture. The landscape of Dogon Country is beautiful and you will be awestruck by the views. Don't forget to pick up some Kola Nuts before heading to Dogon Country. The elders of the villages love them and they make for a good introduction.
